New Romance vs A Do-Over Relationship
By Wareeze Woodson
A question
has been posed; which is harder to write, a novel of newly discovered romance,
or one about a rekindled love. I’ve written both. Both present their own set of
challenges, but all are headed in the same direction—happily ever-after. The
only ending I wholly endorse.
I have
written the romance sparked between two people never before in love with each
other book along with the love rekindled novel. There are some differences in
writing a story of newly discovered love and a do-over relationship. Which is
the hardest? In both, the characters must live and breathe in the author’s
mind. Emotions of love, hate, despair, desperation or wonderful joy and
happiness exist in every relationship and depend on the situation in which the
characters find themselves.
It’s the
middles that present the problems. The characters in a first time romance
he/she are on the journey of discovery. Will he/she find a happy ever-after
ending or walk away with a dented heart and bruised ego? The rekindled love
wanders down a familiar path. Will the relationship work this time around and
if so, why now instead of the first time?
In the
chance for a do-over, raw, tentative emotions play a large part. Can the
relationship between two people be salvaged when shredded emotions are in play?
Walking on eggshells is often involved while the characters desperately try to
rebuild a love that was lost. Is it worth it?
I have
struggled to express the emotional turmoil of characters coming together again.
Trust is in abeyance. Are the characters (he/she) willing to place themselves
in jeopardy again? More complicated emotions, oft times battered, must be dealt
with in the rekindled story. In the new romance, the characters go forth with
hope and expectations of the happy ever-after ending. Therefore, when I
consider all the aspects of each story, I suppose the do-over is the most
difficult to write after all.

Born and raised in Latvia, Rebecca Balodis marries Rhys Sudduth, an
English diplomat. Shortly thereafter, he is summoned home to attend his
father’s deathbed. Rebecca cannot accompany him at the time and becomes
trapped in the turmoil plaguing her country. He is informed she died in
the upheaval.
Nearly four years later, Rebecca escapes and arrives in London with
their son in tow. Arriving in the middle of his sister’s ball proves
awkward, especially since Rhys plans to announce his betrothal to a
young debutante later in the evening.
Can this pair ever find or even recognize an enduring love?

I write historical romance fiction novels set in the 1800s forward with a twist of suspense. All of my characters and stories that are portrayed in my books are fictitious. I am a native of Texas, but I have traveled through out America and beyond. As a dreamer, I love to visit new places where I can imagine a heroine meeting a hero in a special way. I’m an avid reader of (all sorts) and I love to write.
I married my high school sweat-heart and after having raised three sons plus one daughter, our love for each other remains unshaken. Now we enjoy our eight grandchildren. We can send them home, but we’re always happy for their return.
Outside of my family activities, I sing with the Silver Belles at my church and hate to miss even one practice. The local chapter of RWA is also at the top of my list of pleasures. It keeps me grounded with craft and connected with other writers.
Most of all, I enjoy going fishing with my husband. Give me a pole and leave me alone to bask in the sun, listening to water gurgle along the riverbanks while allowing my mind to float away to some distance place. Ah! Perfect.
